JEANNETTE L. CLARIOND

A poet, translator, and editor, Jeannette L. Clariond has devoted much of her professional life to the study of thought and religion in ancient Mexico, a subject on which she has given numerous seminars and conferences in Mexico and abroad.

She is the author of Dessert Memory, Image of Absence, All Before Nightfall, The Tears of Things (Enriqueta Ochoa Ibero-american prize of poetry), Chihuahua’s Notebook and recently published, Ceguera, allí estarás (Nueva York Poetry Press, 2024). Her book Sobre la fronda y la medida won the Juan Ramón Jiménez International Poetry Prize. The Autonomous University of Nuevo León honored her with its Literary Arts Award in 2021.

In December of the same year, poems from Leve sangre were presented in the National Auditorium of Spain in the form of cantatas composed by musician Ramón Paús. Clariond is the translator of the complete works of Elizabeth Bishop and Primo Levi, among others. Most recently, she’s been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture in France. Meanwhile, the Alda Merini House Museum in Milan recognized her for 25 years of uninterrupted work translating Merini. She initiated the first Braille Poetry Contest in Mexico. In 2021, Clariond’s name was added to Mexico’s National System of Creators. She is the founder of the prestigious Editorial Vaso Roto.
